Mariam And Nana In A Thousand Splendid Suns

In the first part of "A Thousand Splendid Suns" I read about Mariam and her mother Nana, who live in a small village of Gul Duman. Nana called her a “harami” after she accidentally breaks an old family sugar bowl. Mariam is an illegitimate child of Jalil and Nana. Nana was Jalil’s housekeeper and the two had an affair, which resulted in Mariam. Jalil housed Mariam and Nana because he wanted to protect his reputation.
