Marie Dymit: Effective Communication In The Classroom
We are family Teaching a choir is like having a large family be in a room together making beautiful sounds in harmony. Marie Dymit teaches both the choirs at South campus and one at North campus: Mariners, Choraliers and Bel Canto. Her students in Mariners call her Mama Dym Dym and her choirs treat each other as family. She can tell that some of the students like each other more than others, but that is how a family works. Marie is very sincere about her and her coworker being close, saying: “ Wendy Suoja and I are friends, not just coworkers.” She also said that they work well together but they teach their students differently and she knows her students see that. Her students like both the teachers but in different ways, Wendy Suoja is the theatre director so she knows she can not compete with that relationship. Commenting on something her students say all the time, “I hate …show more content…
He was very talented and she loved the way his voice sounded but he thought that he was too good for her class and that she was not going to be able to teach him anything. At one of their concerts, she recalled upon that the pitch had already been given to the choir for them to start the song and somebody in the audience said something loud enough for this kid to hear it. This kid then had the audacity to yell something back at that person and Marie said with a small chuckle “when we came back from the weekend break, that kid was not in my class anymore.”
“When I first started here back in 2000, I was the only female conductor in the Suburban East Conference” recalled Marie Dymit. When she was in high school her conductor, Lee Carlson, was a male teacher but she remembers him always pushing her to do what she wanted to do in life. He fueled her passion for choir with the passion he put into his choir groups. He was her role model in high school and even now because he is a big part of why she choose to be a choir

Our last observation this semester was with Rachel Pollard at Hartwood Elementary School. This school includes grades K-5. Mrs. Pollard is in a very unique situation, because she sees each of her classes for forty minutes twice a week. Since she has twice as much time with her students as compared to most other music teachers, her students are able to advance quickly with their musical skills. This benefit was very obvious through my observations. Mrs. Pollard’s lessons were well thought-out and she had clear objectives in mind for each activity. Everything she did served a purpose, including singing a song to move the students into a new seating arrangement and her “point checks” at the beginning of class.…

The fourth through eighth grade choristers enter onto the risers on the stage in organized rows, hands at their sides, shoulders back and aligned with nervous smiles across their faces. This is the students first time being adjudicated The auditorium is full of other students, teachers, and adjudicators from around the city ready to hear the product of weekly after school rehearsals throughout the school year. The chorus director looks around the auditorium and counts five former music instructors and the nostalgia of being that fourth-eighth grader on stage with those instructors floods the director's mind. She smiles, bows to the audience, turns, and gives a reassuring thumbs up to the bright, developing musicians in front of her.…

The film “Twenty Feet to Stardom” discussed about women with great voices working as backup singers. Backup singers may not seem as important to many people but in reality this women were very important to the actual songs. These artists like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear and share their story of how sacrificing and rewarding their careers were. Even though they were shadows of many legends, they still carry a pride and satisfaction with what they did. These women carry a lot of history; they started in the 50s when colored women started to become backup singers. They were popular due to the fact that they brought emotion and soul with their voice. As a woman they had to work hard and be like a chameleon with their voice. Every song was different; they had to work with different demands that were being asked. Yet, they were great with that they did because of the passion they had about singing. These women were dedicated and proud with what they did even though they did not get much credit. Even though they are not well known they work with great celebrities like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, and many more that were seeking for great voices. These women were very important for the artist that was seeking them to work with as backup singers. Few were able to become singers but not many were successful, one great singer was Darlene Love she was famous in her time and she went on to become an actress. These women come from what people call “old school”, but, they are still popular. I teach them how to use proper diction, proper posture and eye contact. I teach them how to be respectful. I teach them how to apply these skills to other areas of their lives. In the Summer of 2011, I was privileged to work with the children at Vacation Bible School. This included children from my church and members of the community who did not attend the church. I took reluctant kids from apprehensive parents and transformed them into excited, energetic, eager singers. I transferred my love of music to this group of 86 kids, who became motivated and inspired by my energy, innovation and gymnastic skills. Through the use of interactive signs and audience participation, I evoked in them a spirit of leadership while teaching good moral values. Each child wanted a chance to lead out in front with me. Parents were awed at the transformation in their kids after one week. My goal is to unlock the potential in…

This year I decided to interview Mrs. Jackie Hammers, the choral director of our Jr. High School. I have a love for music and she was a very inspirational teacher when I was younger, so I felt the need to ask her about her job. Mrs. Hammers is like I said a music teacher, but to be more direct she teaches 7th grade general music and is the choral or vocal music director at the school. Her daily routine consists of the following, taking attendance and watching the morning announcements before class starts. Then she teaches 3 periods of general music, then she finally gets to have her half an hour choir rehearsal, which you have to audition to be a part of. Then she teaches another period, then off to lunch! After lunch she plans her criteria…
