So what is “The Market Revolution” and how has it impacted the United States? Generally speaking “ The Market Revolution” is an expansion of the market which basically makes improvements in communication, transportation and manufacturing. Let’s take a step further and ask ourselves “What is Market”. Market refers to a group of people who are willing to buy a particular product from you. Before the “Market Revolution” most products were produced and sold locally which basically meant that your market was everyone that was closer to you or your city. Lack of communication and transportation basically translated to less sales and smaller market because the person couldn't sell their product to anyone who lived much further away than they could walk in a single day. What kind of improvement were made in the communication?
The telegraph was a leap ahead in communication technology. This were the first time in the human history that you could communicate with someone instantly over vast distances. So, basically this meant that a farmer in Ohio could order farming tools from the New England factory for the first time but how can the good arrive to Ohio? That's where some improvement in the transportation began to take place in. In the early 1800’s, better roads started being built, canals were being dug and eventually railroads began going under construction. All of this now meant that you could sell your products to distant buyers and buy products from distant
sellers.
What good would communication and transportation do if you could produce more inventory. Thats where we started to see some changes in the manufacturing. In the early 1800’s machines started being used in the manufacturing process, new sources of power such as water and steam were used to power these machines. The machines which were “huge” were housed in the factories. Products that were made by machine were faster and cheaper than if they were made handmade which basically meant that more people could afford to buy the products.
The changes and advancements in manufacturing, communication and transportation allowed businesses to sell more and have a bigger market. The market revolution has impacted America in several different ways. Keep in my mind that all of this change did not happen overnight, it happened gradually. The market revolution made possible for a lot of farmers to make more money than it was possible before. It also allowed the growth of industry in the factories which basically meant that factorie could grow if they sold goods to more people. This all led to a growing middle class. Factories required higher educated individuals such as engineers, accountants, sales people and etc to sell more and those educated individuals were the middle classman. On the other hand not all people benefited, especially the lower class people who were skilled labors went out of business or lost their jobs because they could not have compete with the factories.
