The Beauty of Marriage
Arranged marriages are consensual unions of two people that are agreed upon by other family members. These marriages are the beginning of a lifetime of togetherness not just between the bride and groom but between their families. These marriages are healthy unions that show commitment and growing love.
Serena Nanda an American cultural anthropologist explored the cultural influences surrounding the process of arranged marriages. In Arranging a Marriage in India she was able to give first hand details because of her ability to participate in the process. Nanda is known for her pioneer work with the hijra, or the third gender, of India. Serena Nanda help realized that people want the same thing in a marriage whether it’s in India or America. The Monsoon wedding was directed by Mira Nair. This movie gave a realistic view as it showed the similarities traditional and modern day marital arrangements. It shows the value of family and tradition and also reveals the importance of maintaining your social and economic class.
Love will not be in the equation for many at first. Compatibility is the key to ease all tension in the relationship. This gives the couple little time to dispute so they can focus on each other and not their differences. Spouses are meticulously chosen based on shared values so decisions like the upbringing of future kids, keeping family traditions and the culture alive will remain. It’s in best interest of all parties involved if both the bride and groom are from the same social and economic class. As Serena Nanda revealed the chosen bride will be highly esteemed, religious, soft-spoken and modest. She rarely gossip and will avoid conflict at all cost. Both bride and groom will be what each family will choose as a great representation of their family.
