Martha Stewart Character Traits

On August 3rd, 1941, Martha and Edward Kostyra gave birth to Martha Stewart. Martha was the second born out of six kids and was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Here is her story of how she became one of the great business leaders. Growing up, Stuart's father had made sure that from a young age the children would be taught the value of self-sufficiency. With this, the Kostyra children had to do various household chores. From this, Stewart learned how to cook, sew, and garden. From the skills she was taught as a child, she turned her chores into hobbies. This in return, helped show her know-how and how-to skills to others. After high school, New York University offered Stewart a full scholarship. Stewart declined the offer and attended Barnard College to study history. She continued to be a model in college and was one of America’s 10 best-dressed college students; by Glamour magazine in 1961. She married Andrew Stewart, graduated from Barnard with a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, and continued to work as a model in New York.
According to Alexis, her mother was horrible and a perfectionist. Martha stopped being a model after Alexis was born and became involved with Wall Street trading. She obtained a position as a stockbroker with Monness, Williams, and Sidel. She left Wall Street in 1972 and developed a catering business. In 1979, Martha published her first book called Entertaining.
