This statement is dealing with Martin Luther, making changes and keeping some things the same, for his life with the Church and his practices in it. Luther had problems with corrupt Church practices, theological disputes, Christian Humanism, and Political Motives. Some examples of Martin Luther being revolutionary is the whole idea behind indulgences, Luther denying the church and popes authority, him changing the sacraments from 7 to 2, and Luther being anti-sematic. Some examples of how Martin Luther was conservative was Luther leaving the monastery, Luther’s view on the peasants revolt, and using some of the Roman Catholic Church's views on religion. Martin Luther does warrant the label as revolutionary and conservative.
An example of indulgence is dealing with Johann Tetzel. Johann Tetzel was a German priest, selling expensive indulgences in German states. These indulgences would allegedly free the purchasers and any deceased relatives from any sins that may be preventing them from reaching salvation. This also meant that for purchasers, it cleared their sins from the past and future. Revenue was also generated from the selling of indulgences. The indulgences were used for the building of the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Luther protested the indulgences by posting the “95 Theses”. The “95 Theses” was Luthers reaction to Johann Tetzel’s selling of indulgences in German States. Luther nailed this to the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The “95 Theses” was 95 statements written to be a springboard for academical discussion on “ Luther was both a revolutionary and a conservative.” Evaluate this statement with respect to Luther's response to the political and social questions of his day.
