The Youth of Kerbala
“Youth is happy because it has the capacity to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.”
―this was said by one of the most influential authors of the 20th century – Franz Kafka
What is youth? What does it mean being a youth? Does it just mean that you are physically young? Or that you are also mentally young too?
And being mentally young is what…? It means to be able to recognize beauty…. to enjoy and utilize every blessings of the creator in this world. But most importantly, it means to love. To love so much that you would be ready to sacrifice anything for that love, because without love, how can you sacrifice.
Let’s briefly go back in history 1400years ago, to the youth of kerbala!!!! What do we see and hear
A youth, whose father had already been killed, came out into the battlefield on the day of ashura. His mother told him, “O dear son! Step out and fight in the presence of the grandson of the Prophet of Allah (S).” When the youth stepped out, Imam saw him and said,
“The father of this youth has been killed; perhaps his mother would not like him to come out into the battle.”
The youth replied, “Rather my mother has ordered me to do so.” This shows that he was ready to do anything his mother told him without question! But why would he question it? He was dying for his Imam. He was sacrificing himself for Islam. Why? Because he was a youth…he had the capacity to fight, to sacrifice, for the love of Allah. Then he stepped into the battlefield reciting the following: “My Master is Husayn and what a Best Master, who is the delight of the heart of the conveyor of good deeds and a warner…Ali (a.s.) is his father and Fatima (a.s.) his mother, do you know anyone who is his co-equal? His face is like a shining star and his forehead like a full moon bright.”
Such valor. Such spirit. Such gallantry. Such bravery. Such LOVE.
This kind of love can only come from the burning hearts of youth…so can we not

I found the quote in my epigraph to be very accurate; how can one become old and wise if they aren’t first “young and stupid”? Kids, teenagers and young adults tend to go against their parents’ words of wisdom to do what they believe will be fun, change their beliefs in politics and religion, and believe the idea of thinking they know everything, but they really don’t. I know this from experience, and a common example is when asking for permission to go do something stupid because everyone else is doing it, parents often say “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?”, even though it is tempting to say yes, we answer no because us young people really know that our parents are actually correct. When young people become older and…

It is Baba’s choice that set the story of Amir and Hasan into motion. His brief moment of infidelity and the fact he was never able to fully claim his illegitimate son led to a chronicle of events that defined Amir. However, it was not only this choice that came to affect the people around him. The way he raised Amir under the constant pressure of being someone he was not, ultimately led for his son to believe he needed to prove his worth. During the kite contest Amir confesses that he needs to “Show [Baba] once and for all that his son was worthy” (56), showcasing a boy who has the incessant need to prove his self-worth. Despite this Baba never truly accepted his son as he was, and even confessed that Amir is “A boy who won’t stand up for himself” (22). Throughout the majority of his life, Baba tried his best to shape Amir into the son he designed. Just like how he bends the world into his liking Baba sought to mold Amir to be just like him. In the end, however, it was revealed that he was merely a man with a “tortured soul” (301), who saw redemption in the marks he would leave the…

Many aspects of living are changing and conforming to the things the youth of today are doing and revolutionizing our culture. (Bennet, 2007) states “Youth is so undefinable because of how rapidly it is changing. As soon as a definition of youth comes out, it is already contradicted by the new youth that is replacing the old”. We all see it adults everywhere panic about how fast things are changing compared to years ago when they were growing up they are afraid they will never be able to keep up with new trends. They see how easily influenced our society is to anything “new and exciting” the youth do. Older generations tend to look upon their own youth and those youth cultures of the past as perhaps more innocent and productive than they may have been realistically.…

You are only young once. William Butler Yeats made the most of his youth, belonging to influential groups and leading literature revival attempts. He believed that once you were older, you start to depart from the real world. He was a magnificent poet, and in one of his most famous poems, this was a leading theme. W. B. Yeats powerful poem “Sailing to Byzantium” is often considered one of his best works, examining “the conflict between youth and age through…the journey for spiritual knowledge” (Napierkowski 210).…
