“Mary Had a Little Ham” is the story of a barnyard pig that wants to be a Broadway star and eventually brings his dream to realization, thanks to a little girl at the barn named Mary who believes in him. He sings a lot about how he wants to leave his home, and “get out of the slop.” His two pig siblings doubt him and mock him until he is successful, then they suddenly love him. There is a style to their characters that they are desperate for whatever it is they want. Amy Reynolds, who played the witch, used very “witchy” vocalizations and laughs to further stylize her character in a comedic way. One memorable stage picture is the Snow Queen sprinkling her snow down and singing on top of the ladder. It emphasizes her mystical presence and her elevated power. Another one that stood out was the character of Kai looking out with offstage focus as math equations pass by in the background on screen. In addition, when the Snow Queen first kisses Kai, it is a very intense and memorable
