This 1920’s advertisement is trying to sell a product called HP sauce. When you first see the ad, you most likely would immediately recognize the picture of Mary and her lamb from the nursery rhyme story “Mary had a Little Lamb”. In the paragraphs below the picture, in the beginning, the speaker talks about how everyone just loves Mary and her lamb, and by the second paragraph the speaker adds in how much Mary loves to eat HP sauce with her lamb.
The overall effect and tone of the ad is very old-fashioned, especially in the end when they added in “Good housewives know how much HP sauce improves the plainest foods and makes it appetizing and delicious.” The ad is trying to connect with their audience and let them know that HP sauce can easily make any food better tasting.
The target audience of this advertisement is housewives of the 1920’s. This was published in the early 1920s, and during that time most women stayed at home, took care of their children, cooked, and cleaned. Many of those women wanted to know ways to quickly make better tasting food so that they had time to themselves.
