Mary Sappho's Involvement In Education
It is evident that the majority of philosophers of education are men. Within this course thus far, we have looked at twenty-four significant individuals who have influenced education in some way. Of the twenty- four, five are women. It is interesting to note that in today’s society, there are almost twice as many female teachers as males. These women who we have discussed in class has had an impact which have given females this pathway into education. Sappho was the first woman we were introduced to within this course during the Ancient Greece period. The second woman, Mary Wollstonecraft was introduced to us during the topic of the enlightenment. This means that all areas are to be presented with equal importance. She believed in teaching her students many elements to broaden their skills. These elements include; intellectual development through the use of poetry relating to reading, writing and memorization, physical development referring to dancing, spiritual development through the use of singing to the muses, human virtues and social grace (20). Her main view of the role of teachers is to be a mentor for students (47). This means that teachers should help their students develop and grow into mature women through the use of education. The final outcome of education was to develop social, physical and emotional skills which would prepare these women for marriage …show more content…
She then turned to writing. Her first piece was a manual targeted towards women who should educate and improve themselves. This piece was published, and later she received an offer to tutor girls for a family, but this did not last long. So, she turned back to writing (187). I believe that Mary Wollstonecraft’s major contribution to education was through the use of writing. She addresses many issues that limited women to their rights. She expressed her thoughts on day schools for girls and higher education for women. She fought against Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s sexist remarks about women and held firm with her opinion that women have power

    Mary Wollstonecraft stated in the Vindication of the Rights of Women “... women must be allowed to found their virtue on knowledge, which is scarcely possible unless they be educated by the same pursuits as men”(Doc D).
