“A Vindication of the Rights of Woman”, a book written by Mary Wollstonecraft, is a declaration of the rights of the women for equality of education, and to civil opportunities. Wollstonecraft advocates education as key, for women to attain a sense of self-respect, and a new self-image that can enable them to live to their fullest capabilities. The theme of the story is fixated on education. There is nothing Wollstonecraft wants more than a woman to have access to the same kind of education as men. Between male and female, the men had a (n) upper hand in society. Women did not have the same rights as men. For the most part, Mary Wollstonecraft was an extremely educated woman; in her mind all of women’s worst qualities came from their lack …show more content…

Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, with on Political and Moral Subjects (also known simply as A Vindication of the Rights of women) is thought by many to be the real beginning of feminism. This is considered to be the first written example of feminist ideas. However, before Wollstonecraft, others had written about the need for more women’s rights. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is the first complete statement about the necessity for women to be taught and educated, and for a mutual agreement of gender differences. Wollstonecraft’s first and foremost concern is certainly the education of women. Wollstonecraft tells us from the very beginning that our greatest gift is our capability to use reasoning. Since males…

I postulate that advocates for women’s education during the new republic period believed that if their ideas were wrapped in concepts about how women’s education would benefit men and society, these ideas would be better received and create a greater impact within the new impressionable nation. Republican motherhood offered a platform for activists that would be accepted by society and allowed women to become more educated and involved in the public sphere. Many writers, especially Wollstonecraft and Murray posed very progressive concepts of full equality that may not have been accepted within society. Wollstonecraft stated, “Let woman share the rights and she will emulate the virtues of a man.” However, the powerful statement for women’s equality is followed by, “Meek wives are, in general, foolish mothers.”…

Wollstonecraft believes that the concept of virtue isn’t being grasped correctly. According to men, virtuous women are seen as obedient, object of desire, soft temper, weak, innocent, inferior, and seek protection from a man. Those are all false education of virtues that are misinterpreted by men. False education of virtues doesn’t contribute to a strong educated woman. Wollstonecraft knows that the true virtues that a woman should possess should be: intellectual, courageous, honor, and independence. Wollstonecraft writes, “But in the education of women, the cultivation of the understanding is always subordinate to the acquirement of some corporeal accomplishment” (Wollstonecraft 4). This quote means that if a woman is naturally wise or smart, it is never recognized. It is always naturally suppressed and ignored. I think men specifically feel that if women were to attain the same knowledge as them that it would make women more powerful or would make a man feel less powerful. In fact, women are just trying to achieve the same goals and reach the same limits that men are provided with from birth. For example, the President of the United States is a male dominated career, of course there has been women who aspire that job,…

Wollstonecraft came from a more femanistic approach towards education. She believed that women should be properly educated as to not fall into the social norm of having less value in society than men. “This is the very point I am at. I do not wish them to have power over men; but over themselves,”( Wollstonecraft,191-194). Women, in her eyes, should be educated but rather to have power over…

Zagarri pulls from Wollstonecraft and Paine’s written head to head dispute of women’s rights in the 1790’s. Thomas Paine wrote a book called The Rights of Man, issued in 1791 and 1792. While the book framed the formal and systematic natural rights of all human beings, Paine excludes women from the “natural” rights to own property, to vote, and to participate in the government (Zagarri 207). Mary Wollstonecraft took a stand for women and called it a “Revolution in Female Manners.” Wollstonecraft sought to open as many doors for women as she could by educating the society on equal rights for all.…

Mary Wollstonecraft stated in the Vindication of the Rights of Women “... women must be allowed to found their virtue on knowledge, which is scarcely possible unless they be educated by the same pursuits as men”(Doc D). This quote means that for women to be respectful and have much intellect, they must have the same education as men. This is important to her idea because one step to having equality with women is education which was not equal. She also said “ in short,... reason and experience convince me that the only method of leading women to fulfill their peculiar duties is to free them from all restraint by allowing them to participate in the inherent rights of mankind. Make them free, and they will quickly become wise and virtuous”(Doc D).This quote is stating that women are not given the ability to grow in intellect and they cannot become smart, or ethical without equality. This supports Wollstonecraft's idea because if women just had the same equality more and more women would become more than just a housewife or caretaker. Mary Wollstonecraft was a massive part of women's equality and without her; women wouldn't have the equality they have today. Through all three of them; Locke, Voltaire, and Wollstonecraft, together made a huge impression and now there is a better government, more equality in religion, and close to complete women's…

Justifying by saying women need education for their fulfillment or to reach their goals, it just depends on the party or government. So yes, both can be seen to correlate with Wollstonecraft’s view on women’s education if you explain it properly. In most cases it could be seen as a need to be educated, so in which case a claim of right is the correct answer. Although, especially back in the day, it could be seen more as a benefit for the women not to be educated and to stay home while the men went and worked. In this case, they obviously think that women do not or should not be educated, so they don’t have as many rights.…

In the Vindication of the Rights of Woman Wollstonecraft wanted to create equal opportunity for women as well as for men. The playing field for both men and women alike should be even; one shouldn’t be favored over the other. Wollstonecraft wanted women to have the same opportunities that men had; a good formal education as wealthy men, a profession with higher intellectual status, and positive virtues. Women having an educational background and using that to their strengths. For women to use their educational wits to their strengths would provide them with better job opportunities and not always depending on their husband to make decisions for them or household. The power of reason allows every human being to be a world unto itself in which they can use their individual observations and form general rules and ideas that relate to society and events happening around them. Women were rarely given the opportunity to exercise their power of reason. Wollstonecraft was enraged by Rousseau’s views on women, and refused to accept that women were less capable of reason than men, or that vanity, weakness, and frivolity were the natural attributes of her sex. Moreover, she added that this kind of femininity is a social construct rather than being women’s true ability, because men’s and women’s common humanity is based on their shared and God-given possession of reason. Thus, virtue and the power of reason must…
