Behind this master status is the stereotypes that people disabilities are unintelligent and are overly emotional or behaviorally unstable. As a result, I am often treated as if I am a young child and people display excessive and unwarranted effort in order to try to help me. In order to deter this type of behavior, I engaged in impression management so that individuals will gain the impression that I am an intelligent and a capable human being. I help form this impression by manipulating the expressive resources that are available in an interaction or performance. When I am giving a speech, especially to an unfamiliar audience or audiences that includes members with a high level of prestige, I incorporate props from the setting into my performance. These products include a podium and a presentation clicker, which helped give the impression that I am intelligent and knowledgeable. For both every day an important occasions, I strived to present a polished and well-kept appearance through my clothing and hairstyle. Also I frequently wear SMSU clothing in order to emphasize my status as a college student. A particular instance in which I use my appearance as a resource occurred this summer while volunteering at Lifescape when I clearly displayed my ID badge so that my title as a volunteer was apparent.
