Planting Material Production Centre (PMPC) which is located at Tarat, Serian is one of the research institutes that had done research on producing the Matag hybrid. During our visit, PMPC workers had shown to us the new hybrid coconut which is Matag. Matag is a famous coconut (Cocos nucifera) clones in Malaysia. Matag hybrid is a breed between Malayan Red Dwarf (MRD) or Malayan Yellow Dwarf (MYD) with Tagnanan variety. Both MYD and MRD are origin from the Malaysia while the Tagnanan variety is a species that origin from the Philippines. To produce Matag, Tagnanan pollen is collected which act as male part whereas MYD/MRD function as female receiver. Matag hybrid produces high quality fruit in a long-term time and has high commercial …show more content…
In this process, the pollen will be remove manually by using a hand from the flowering parts of the coconut which known as ‘mayang’. The pollen should not be exposed to the environment for a long period because it could reduce the fertility of the pollen. The matured Tagnanan pollen grains are taken and let for dry in the oven at 38 ºC for 48 hours. After that, the pollen will be isolate. Miller is used to mill the pollen. This process will be done repeatedly to ensure the pollen seed is totally ruptured. The ruptured pollen will be filtered by using the fully covered filter until pollen powder is obtained. The pollen powder will be stored in a fridge at least for half years (6months). By making this process, it can prevent the mortality of …show more content…
This process is use to make sure that this artificial pollination is done successfully. The process must be done at a perfect time. The most suitable time to do this process is early in the morning which is before 10 a.m. As mentioned by the PMPC worker, at this time, the stigma is stickier, and to avoid natural hybrid cause by insects. This is due to the female part usually secretes colorless nectar which can attracts insects to go near it. Next, 8 months after the pollination was done, the F1 generation (fruit) of Matag hybrid will start to grow. Once the fruit is matured, the worker will collect and put them at a suitable area. It is crucial to know what is needed to produce certain type of Matag. When the green Tagnanan is hybrid with MYD, it will produce green Matag whereas when hybrid with MRD, it will produce yellow Matag. When the orange Tagnanan is hybrid with MRD, it will produce red
