Pippa looked at the new laptop that was sitting on her best friend’s desk in her room. As she stared at it, a feeling of anxiety and bitterness came over her. She wanted one as well, even though she did not need it as her friend did. Her friend was a student in school and she had to do her homework on the laptop. She really needed the laptop for her work, unlike me, who only wants it because owning something like this looked so enticing, she thought. Pippa was struggling with a temptation that so many of us fall prey to. Wants have consequences if we are not careful with the desires we pursue. The moment came that she could finally get the necklace she so much desired: “All at once, in a box lined with black satin, she came upon a superb diamond necklace, and her heart started beating with overwhelming desire. Her hands trembled as she picked it up. She fastened it around her neck over her high-necked dress and stood there gazing at herself ecstatically” (de Maupassant 376). Mathilde got the necklace, but unfortunately she lost it and this led to a debt that took a decade to pay off. She was a woman that faced severe consequences because of her unrealistic desires. It all started with her wanting a new dress for the ball, after a while she not only wanted to new dress but also a necklace to go along with the new dress. Her wanting a new dress that lead to more wants, like the necklace that brought her and her husband into debt. We have to think what the consequences are for our pursuit of replacing goods. The question is, do we want to replace it or do we need to replace it. We cannot just run off and buy something new because we want something new.     In the story “The Necklace” the main character, Mathilda Losisel, is unhappily married to a clerk, and is ungrateful of the life she is living. She thinks that she deserves to be living a better lifestyle, and that materialistic objects and fancy things will make her happy rather than love. Mathilda is invited to the ball in the beginning of the story, and immediately she turns selfish and wants her husband to get the things she desires for her ball.
