In the documentary Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise talks about the late dancer, singer, poet, activist, writer and actress. Released on June 7th, 2016, Directed by Rite Coburn Whack and Bob Hercules who were able to show footage that was never shown to the public. The biography and historical documentary talks about her upbringing in the depression-era south and everything else throughout her lifetime. The film included old clips of her speaking poetry or even talking about things in her past. There are also friends who were interviewed to talk about what Maya may have done for them or even her huge impact on the world. Louis, Missouri and was put on a train by the age of three with her five-year-old brother Bailey to go live with their grandmother. While staying there her grandmother taught her how to read and write, whereas her brother told her to learn as much as she could. As she got older her eyes were opened to the fact that there was a lot of racism and hate while growing up. Some of the whites would flash their behinds at her grandmother and someone even tried to get her Uncle Willie killed by the KKK because he “touched” a white girl. They had to hide him underneath a barrel of potatoes and onions so that they wouldn’t get him. Eventually her Dad came back for them and that’s where she was raped at the age of 7 by her Mother’s boyfriend at the time. She was threatened to never tell anyone but she told her brother Bailey and the man was locked up for one night. When he got out he was killed a few days later and she believed that she had killed him by using her words. From then on out she vowed to never speak again. She stayed that way for five years and was sent back to her grandmother during that time. She meets Mrs. Bertha Flowers and she helped her to speak again by telling her she would never love literature until she would speak it for herself.
