Marguerite Johnson, also known as Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis Missouri. At a time when being black in America was not such a good thing. Her parents named her Marguerite Johnson, but she got the name “Maya” from her older brother Bailey Johnson, it was just a nickname from him. She adopted the “ Angelou ” from her former husband. Maya has lived more than abnormal life. Angelou has explored the arts of dance, singing, theater, and movie and television acting. But most importantly, Maya Angelou is a well-known author and poet who writes about her experiences growing up and finding out how to love herself for who she was. who is a well-respected author. Maya Angelou is very honest about her past and writes nothing but the truth, she is a very influential person to many people, and has won various awards for her writing and actions as a Civil Rights activist.
Maya Angelou has lived a hard-knock life, and she never holds back the truth when she reminisces about her past. She has experienced first-hand prejudice, being taken advantage of, not only her mind, but her body, have been abandoned by her parents, early in her life, and she has had a really tough time finding self-love. Ms. Angelou took all of the obstacles, she's been through, and turned it into a memoir about her struggles. One of her most famous books, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, emphasize everything Angelou has been through from the time she was put on a train to her grandmother's, to her bearing her first child, Guy Johnson. This book is a challenged book because Ms. Angelou doesn't hold back the truth. She writes with an abundance of vivid details, truly expressing her feelings throughout her entire book. Even President Obama stated, “Above all, she was a storyteller, and her greatest stories were true.” She is a very effective writer and all of the struggles that she has expressed to the world with her books, is why she is such a credible person, any average person can relate to. She is a very honest writer and has made a tremendous impact on many people's lives, throughout her life.
Angelou has done traveled all around the world speaking her truth, inspiring many people with her uplifting words.
Maya Angelou was a Civil Rights activist. She worked closely with Malcolm X and served as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1959. She expressed her concern within the African-American communities all over the country. She worked hard to achieve equality for African-Americans. Other writers and spokespeople such as Oprah Winfrey, has written about her life and inspirations. Winfrey has often been influenced by Maya Angelou, as she expressed in her writings and on her famous network. Angelou has also influenced different artists from Tupac Shakur and Nicki Minaj to artist such as Kanye West. Many artists has taken Ms. Angelou’s poems and experts, and put them into their songs, movies, and television shows. Angelou has even featured on a rapper named Common, song about a journey to achieve the impossible. Many themes in most of Angelou’s books are universal themes of wisdom and all around love. Which is one reason people all around the world can enjoy and learn from her books. Maya is known to have inspired many women, black women in general. With her stories, she has been able to reach millions of people who have encountered her

In 2010, Maya Angelou received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award a civilian can receive, given to her by none other, Barack Obama. Maya never did complete college, but she has acquired more than fifty honorary degrees, from various colleges. She has worked very hard for these awards, and they are well deserved. She was given a specific NAACP award three times. It really goes to show, how important she is too many people, being that she has received a great amount of awards throughout her career.
Maya Angelou died May 24, 2014, she was a literary voice remembered for her global influences and her unforgettable stories and poems. Angelou has lived a difficult life, but through it all, she preserved and strived to make a change in the world. Especially because she grew up in the south, during a time blacks were treated like they were less than a human being. Angelou is very honest about her past, and in a way, embraces everything she went through. Throughout her life, she has uplifted many people with her swift words through her poetry. From uplifting women with her famous piece, Phenomenal Women, to inspiring the youth with, Still I Rise, Maya was a very influential person. All of the honorary awards she has won can prove how a majority of the people in the country view her as a person, writer, and mother.
