MAYA LIN Currently Maya Lin is working on her final memorial – What is Missing? Which aims at bringing awareness to habitat loss and current crisis surrounding biodiversity related issues. According to me, the perfect balance between art and architecture is maintained by her artwork which can be seen throughout her career that inculcates as a part-large scale site specific installations, architectural work, detailed studio artwork and memorials creating a remarkable body of work. Her art has redefined the concept of Landscape through a twenty-first century lens and merging rational and technological order by studying and visualising the natural world. Taking micro and macro views of the earth – aerial and satellite mapping devices and translates that information into environmental installations, intimate sculptures and drawings.
Representing water and how it helped human society grow by pins was something vague. Just the silver river doesn’t fulfil the argument as to why pins are used. Her art work seems quite subtle and extremely deep in its making. But at the same time it also creates a sense of aesthetic aura around it which is quite attractive and makes one think about it. Talking about her Eleven minute line project is just like her first project where she just modulates and plays with the level and gradient to create spaces and experiences. By creating such small changes Maya Lin tries to create a sense of publicness in that piece of barren land which was just there. I feel she makes her installations and sculptures based on her experiences and preconceived notions about certain things which later falls in place but there is a deep thought given to the relation that the art piece is going to have with its context that is its immediate surrounding and it also has a sense of reviving the past into the
