As a leader, I am very concerned about fairness in the group because according to my past experiences a lack of fairness produces very strong tensions. This is also confirmed by the SCARF model as well when it states that an individual may even go as far as to die for something (Rock, 2008). Because of this I find that it is essential to validate people’s opinions and to be both fair and impartial when dealing with them.
My learning of the SCARF model (Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness) has given me insight into human nature and its tendencies. While learning about non-violent communication helps you to avoid harboring judgmental thoughts, jumping to conclusions and provides a framework for addressing serious issues in a way that hopefully leaves both parties feeling empowered and also validated.
