I was not raised, or perhaps my personality did not point me to be very aggressive, particularity in the face of confrontation. However working in a very male dominate field, the work atmosphere tends to me one of one-up-man-ship and rather open aggressiveness. As a female being aggressive in the same manner and for the same reasons that males are aggressive, whether meant or not, is perceived as being anti-male, unfriendly, hostile and unattractive. Sum that up and usually what one gets called behind one's back is a “bitch.” Regardless of name calling, one thing remains true to me. The tools outlined here, and particularly the NVC method of communication are meant to bring to light to the participants just what such communication means and does to those involved. This is a matter of re-framing and reflection. The re-framing takes the person or group who has a certain perception and by doing so, opens eyes and I hope hearts to others. As a leader, using NVC as a tool not only on my team, but also on myself shifts perspective and permits the proverbial “shoe on the other foot” thinking.
