MC Sports - Max, Jake, Marc & RJ I. Overview a. The retailer we have selected is MC Sports. This retailer is a sporting goods retailer and we have chosen it because we all like golf. MC Sports features products and apparel for all sorts of sports. MC Sports features products for action sports, team sports, golf and tennis, outdoor activities, apparel, footwear, and fitness. b. MC Sports originated in 1946 as a single store in Grand Rapids, MI. The original name of the store was Michigan Clothiers. Michigan Clothiers reflected a wide range of products, ranging from men’s clothing to military surplus. In 1962, the company refined its business strategy and changed its name to MC Sporting Goods. The company started to focus completely on quality sports equipment, footwear, and apparel. MC Sports now operates 74 stores in seven different states throughout the Midwest. MC Sports is now one of the few remaining privately held sporting good chains. c. Dunham’s Sports is the closest competitor to MC Sports. Dunham’s Sports is the largest sporting goods chain in the Midwest. Dunham’s Sports has stores in 16 different states, from Nebraska to Maryland and has more than 170 stores. Every store offers a full line of traditional sporting goods and athletic equipment as well as a wide variety of active and casual sports apparel and footwear. Dunham’s Sports motto is “Big Names…Low Prices.” II. Situation Analysis d. MC Sports is a privately owned retail store. MC Sports originated in 1946 as a single store in Grand Rapids. e. The strategy mix that MC sports follows is a traditional department store. MC Sports stores can be found in business districts, shopping centers or an isolated store. They carry many different varieties of sporting goods merchandise. From hunting to running, from basketball to Frisbee golf. The article projects a timeline about the history of Sports Authority and their relationship with Kmart. In summary of the article, Sports Authority opened its first store in 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Kmart acquired the company in 1990 and through their financial support; Sports Authority was able to expand.
