McCarthyism
In the 1940’s to 50’s the belief in McCarthyism was growing the attention of the American people. When people learned about it they realized the true danger they became afraid of it, and this is when accusations began. Edward Murrow is a CBS news reporter and he made report on John McCarthy and argues his ideas and tries to get the People’s attention through his broadcasts. Murrow had many famous quotes and statements towards McCarthy and he was the first one to go head to head with him and his belief about communism. McCarthyism was a threat to the United States from a foreign country just like what happened not to long ago which was 9/11. America was changed and devastated from this event which changed the thoughts of threats from foreign countries to the United States. Today we are much more aware of situations that can create a large stir in society.
McCarthy first gained national attention in 1950, when he charged that Communists dominated the State Department. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee investigated the department but found no Communists or Communist sympathizers there. Despite the investigation, McCarthy still made many additional accusations and gained many followers. He and other conservatives blamed many of the nation's problems on the assumption of a secret presence of Communists in the government. “No one can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices” is a very famous quote from Edward that was said during one of his broadcasts. Still today we are afraid of what can happen when other countries have problems with us and everyday we here about these event on the news as well which informed many American citizens of foreign affairs. Another quote that represents this well is “ McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves rolled up” explains that we developed this fear with our own destruction and Edward Murrow explained this perfectly to millions of
