The order specified that one criterion to be used in determining that “reasonable grounds exist for relief that the person involved was disloyal” would be a finding of “membership in, affiliation with or sympathetic association” with any organization determined by the attorney general to be “ totalitarian fascist communists or subversion” or advocating or approving the force full denial of constitutional rights to other persons or seeking “to alter to form of government of the United States by unconstitutional means” ” - Robert J. The HUAC gave people the chance to testify or to not. Many did not, but that to the HUAC was a sign of guilt. For those who did agree to testify, sometimes the lawyers or judges would push them to name people who were with them. They believed that communists in Hollywood were sneaking hidden messages into movies. Another problem they had posen was that they had the power to put bad images of the U.S in movies. Although there was no actual evidence, 40 people in the movie business had received subpoenas and they called witnesses and forced them to give testimony’s bout who the suspected to be communists. Hollywood people found it to be a violation to their civil rights and their civil liberties, which is “the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights.” (dictionary.com) 10 of the 40-people refused to give a testimony.
