Thesis: The multi-electrode array (MEA) is the greatest breakthrough in neuroscience today because it will lessen millions of people’s pain dramatically, it will spare millions of animals from cruelty and death, and it will cure millions of people and animals from paralysis.
I. People’s chronic neurological pain will be reduced because of the ability of MEAs above any other breakthrough in neuroscience today.
A. While there are many treatments in the world that alleviate the suffering of neurological conditions, the suffering that occurs is still high.
1. Reoccurring pain from various neurological ailments is felt by an estimated four million Australians, and the cost associated with treating that pain is upwards of $30 billion (“Spinal transplant hailed as breakthrough for chronic pain treatment” par. 22).

I’m just surprised I’ve never heard of these arrays. I look forward to reading about them.
Me: Well, thanks Andy for answering a few questions about multiple sclerosis today.
Andy: You’re welcome. Thanks for asking them.
Me: I’ll be in touch with that info soon. Talk to you then.
Andy: Alright, bye.
Me: Bye (Rheaume, Andy. “Multiple Sclerosis.” Telephone interview. 15 Mar. 2017).
3. MEAs have the ability to help real people with real neurological conditions have their pain reduced substantially, which will increase their standard of living.
II. Animals will be spared pain, suffering, and death because of the ability of MEAs above any other breakthrough in neuroscience today.
A. Many animals throughout history have suffered or have died in the name of science, and that is no different when it comes to testing new neurological remedies for the eventual use on humans.
1. Animals have undergone product testing, medication testing, surgical testing, and psychological testing.
2. MEAs bring the realization that some of this testing can be eliminated from the plethora of suffering that animals

Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, or in vivo testing, often uses non-human animals in experiments to test the safety of products and has been a topic of heated debate for decades. Although some research uses animals only for natural behaviors observation, F. Barbara Orlans claimed in her book, In the Name of Science: Issues in Responsible Animal Experimentation, that more than sixty percent of all animals used in animal testing suffer from experiment procedure or even get killed in biomedical research and product-safety testing. On the one hand, successful animal testing can lead to medical cures and treatments for human beings, on the other hand, opponents are doubting the reliability of animal…

A disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) is known as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and affects over 2.5 million people worldwide. Around 400,000 people who have the disease reside in the United States. Of that 400,000 the ratio is roughly one woman to every seven men. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease where the individual’s immune system attacks the central nervous system. The immune system attacks and damages the myelin sheath which is a coating that is around the nerve fibers which eventually attacks and kills those nerve fibers as well. Every signal that controls your thoughts and daily movements’ originate from the brain and the spinal cord, it is extremely difficult to move or even think when those signals are not properly functioning.…

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease which affects the nervous system, namely the brain and spinal cord. It causes damage the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects nerve cells (Marieb, 2012). This damage slows down the process in which the brain relays messages to the rest of the body, leading to a variety of symptoms. Some of the most common include pain and numbness; fatigue; walking, balance, and coordination problems; bladder and bowel dysfunction; vision problems; cognitive dysfunction; emotional changes and depression (National Multiple Sclerosis Society, n.d.). Though the exact cause of MS is unknown, it’s widely thought to be an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body (Marieb, 2012). In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. The disease affects women more than men, often beginning sometime between the ages of 20 to 40. Recently, a study found that the incidence of MS appears to be higher in African American women than in caucasians, contradicting previous findings (Langer-Gould, Brara, Beaber, & Zhang, 2013). The disease is usually mild; however, some people lose the ability to write, speak and/or walk. No cause or cure for MS has been found. It remains a mysterious disease with no known pathogen or even known determinants of its severity and course. Three recently published studies say that salt may play a role in MS and other autoimmune diseases, although no study has found a direct link between high salt intake and increased incidence of MS. On a more peculiar note, researchers in England have been investigating how the month of birth (May and November) affects the chances of having MS later in life. It’s thought that it could have something to do with climate, sunlight, and intake of vitamin…

In today’s society, many people debate whether or not using animals in research is humane. An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing. [2] Proponents of animal testing state that it has enabled the development of numerous life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, while opponents state that animal testing is cruel and often yields irrelevant results because animals are so different from human beings. Many different animals are used in scientific studies such as rabbits, mice, primates, dogs, cats, pigs, and cows. I believe that animal testing is beneficial because it provides opportunities to improve the lives of both humans and animals.…
