Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

I intern at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, that provides comprehensive health care and support services to youth from 10 to 24 years old. At the beginning of the internship, I was assigned to serve the Harlem community which has high proportions of Black and Hispanic residents who have low socioeconomic status. Many of the Harlem residents live below the Federal Poverty Level and spend more than 30% of their monthly gross income on rent. Harlem has higher unemployment rates than New York City in general. In addition, Harlem has a high percentage of people without a high school diploma. As a result, many of the Harlem residents have no credential to get high-paying jobs. The primary languages spoken at home are Spanish, French and Chinese. The majority of the Harlem residents has low English proficiency.…

I changed my service project to something that I did recently in girl scouts that I loved. For this project, my Girl Scout troop and I spent four meetings, a total of six hours, making ornaments for Alachua County Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is an organization that provides meals for the elderly or people that are unable to access meals. In total we made 150 Christmas ornaments. The ornaments were given with meals during the month of December. The reason why I enjoyed this project was because I knew receiving a handmade ornament would give people who may be going through hard times, joy. For this project I was responsible for creating “pom-pom ornaments.” For this ornament, I took a Styrofoam ball and glued little pom-poms all around…
