‘So Mote it Be’ is a phrase which was used by the Freemasons in Europe, with the earliest known document relating to the Masons in the Halliwell or Regius Manuscript, which is dated from early in the 15th century in England, in which it was written, ‘ Amen ! amen ! so mot hyt be ! Say we so all per charyte.’

Gerald Gardner, the founder of Modern Wicca, who had Masonic connections, (although this has been debated as untrue, Gardner claimed to be a master mason, which is 3rd degree, but Masonic records show him as only ever having reached the 1st degree, making him an Entered Apprentice Mason, which is the lowest level of the Masonic hierarchy) also incorporated the phrase into his practices.
Within my own practices I would use it to use it to finalise and confirm my workings, to let the Deity know that I wish the ritual to manifest and that I am requesting their blessings. I believe that the phrase is an affirmation, and as well as asking for the God/Goddesses blessing and help in reaching the desired outcome, I also feel that using ‘So Mote it be’ at the end of my working I am telling myself that this will work, and that the positivity that the phrase represents will benefit my
