Measures of Central Tendency Lesson Plan
Subject: Math – Measures of Central Tendency
Grade: 6th
GLE Standard: Mathematics - Data and Probability. 2. Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data. A. Describe and analyze data - find the range and measures of center, including median, mode, and mean.
Materials:
- Bag of mixed candy, or something comparable the students can sort and count
- Whiteboard/blackboard
- Computer and display ability
- Legal sized paper or construction paper
Objectives/Learning Targets: By analyzing a set of data, students will be able to calculate mean, median, mode, and range.
Introduction:
- After greeting the class show a short video, on mean, median, mode, and range, called “Measures of Central Tendency Rap” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jVZi0cNHls
- Give the students a Handout highlighting the key concepts of mean, median, mode, and range, as well as some example problems and the steps to work them
- Next, show the class a large bag of assorted candy, for example a 105 count bag of assorted Easter candy, and ask the class to guess the amount of each candy type
- Finally, group students and distribute the candy (so the students can be ready to sort and count the candy)
Lesson Procedure:
Modeling/Teaching: With the help of the students, separate the various candy types and count how many of each type are in the bag.
Write on the board the results of the data, note which candy type has the least, the most, and if any have the same amount. Example: The data results were:
Starburst M&M’s Twix 3 Musketeers Snickers 24 22 19 24 16
Proceed to find the measures of central tendency:
For finding the mean, explain that the total amount of each candy type make up the sum. Not every bag of mini candies will have the same amount. To find the mean or average amount of each candy type,

In this area we combined all collected data, and placed into an excel worksheet. During this process we were able to collect all necessary information to distinguish the sample mean and sample proportion for each colored candy as well as for the total number of candies collected. After all of the information was collected and computed, a frequency histogram was then created (see below) which allowed one to identify any patterns within the data set. A frequency histogram is a bar graph that represents…

There are a number of things that I am confused on in this class and having a little trouble with. I can do pretty good in the my stat lab. But when it comes to the different types of statistics I seem to struggle. I also struggle with calculating the central tendency and dispersion. Another thing that I not so confident in doing is calculating area between two data values and tell whether they are above or below a certain value. These are some of the thing that I have problems on some worse than other but throughout my busy schedule I am determined to figure these things…

In the first part of the M&M report, we had a very simple task. The task was to go out to a convenience store and buy three bags of M&Ms, and count how many different pieces of candy were in each of the three bags. Out of the entire student’s in the class I would say every single student’s count of each individual color was different. But for the classes sake all of the colors were added up, as was the grand total of all the candies combined in the three bags. The grand total was: Blue 934, Orange 1025, Green 928, Yellow 639, Red 556, Brown 616 and the total being 3684. It is interesting because watching the video they said that certain colored candies have a higher percentage than others. One of those colors’s being Red, and Red is the lowest.…

The lesson is surveying how many students prefer one of the following ice cream flavors: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookie dough, and other. The lesson involves students surveying and socializing with other students, creating graphs, bar graphs, and create Microsoft application visual aids to discover the results of how many students prefer each of the following flavors.…
