I have chosen to investigate the work of Medecins Sans Frontieres, often known as Doctors Without Borders, a Non-Government Organization that works worldwide to alleviate distress where there has been natural disaster, conflict or the outbreak of disease. Medecins Sans Frontieres in its charter states that its mission is to (Medecins sans Frontieres) provide assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict. They do so irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions. The actions of this organisation are underpinned by their principles of medical ethics, independence and being politically neutral.

The have set up hospitals in towns recently vacated by the Islamic State soldiers, to treat people affected by the booby trapping of houses, yards and all public areas. Their work is increasing, because despite many requests, no teams have been sent in to clear the mines and other explosive devices hidden around the towns near Aleppo. MSF provide generators for power, set up hospitals, provide blood for transfusion, as well as medical teams specialising in trauma and burns. The lack of government support constrains the work of MSF as well the insecurity of their staff because of the lack of authorisation. 6.5 million Syrian citizens have been displaced from their homes and remain in the country struggling to survive. MSF provides the humanitarian aid they so desperately need as many local doctors have been killed or fled.
• MSF also operates in Afghanistan, Haiti, Guinea, South Sudan, Niger, Central African Republic, Mali and other troubled parts of the world.
I have tried to outline the specific challenges each of the MSF projects encounters as I discussed each country. Some parts of our wonderful world are seriously troubled and it is encouraging that organisations such as MSF are prepared to risk their lives helping others and providing basic human rights such as food, shelter, medical care and some semblance of safety.
