Media Review: Shrek

I chose to view the movie Shrek which was produced in 2001. Having two small children, it is important for me to understand the value of what my husband and I allow them to view. To many, Shrek is simply a cartoon about a green ogre and a donkey, but Shrek has so much value. This movie can teach us important life lessons if we can open our eyes and see them. The film begins with a narrator explaining that a princess has been placed under a spell and locked away in a tower waiting for her true loves first kiss to free her. We then learn that the story is being read by an ogre reading a page out of fairytale book. Shrek is a large green ogre that lives in solitude in a tree stump in the swamp. In a nearby town a reward is placed on all captured fairytale creatures and ogres. A donkey who is running from the towns people finds Shrek. Shrek’s appearance scares off some townsmen who try to capture him. The donkey, played by Eddie Murphy, thinks he made an instant friend when meeting Shrek. Donkey goes to town and tells all the terrified fairytale creatures that they are safe with Shrek. Donkey takes the fairytale creatures to Shrek’s home in the swamp. Shrek becomes extremely angry with all of his visitors because he likes to be left alone. The fairytale creatures feel safe with Shrek. Shrek, played by Mike Meyers goes with Donkey, into the town of Duloc demanding to see Lord Farquaad, played by John Lithgow. Lord Farquaad sees Shrek from the balcony he is standing on and he tells the towns knights that whomever kills the ogre will be named champion. The champion will be the one who gets to rescue the princess locked away in a tower. Shrek and Donkey work together to defeat the knights. Lord Farquaad names Shrek the champion and sends him on his mission. If Shrek can defeat the fire-breathing dragon and return the rescued
