Shrek is a big green ogre who lives alone in the woods. He is feared by all the people in the land of Duloc. When the ruler of Duloc, Lord Farquaad commands all the fairy-tale beings to live in the woods, Shrek loses his peaceful life in the swamp. He sets out with his new friend Donkey to find Lord Farquaad and convince him to remove all the fairy-tale beings back where there belong. Lord Farquaad accepts under one condition. Shrek must draw out to find the beautiful princess Fiona, who will become Farquaad’s bride, so he can be a king. Shrek begins his quest with Donkey. Fiona is in a castle which is guarded by a dragon. They rescued Fiona. Once they head back Shrek started to like Fiona, but Fiona is keeping something secret. Shrek and Fiona actually have something in common. The story, of course, has a happy ending, were Shrek stops Fiona and Lord Farquaad’s wedding, and Shrek and Fiona ends up together, at last.

In my actantian model, I have chosen the subject to be Shrek because he is the main character.
His task is to find and rescue Fiona (the object) and bring her back to Lord Farquaad (sender) so they can marry and then Shrek can get his swamp back. The sender is the king because he sends Shrek out to find Fiona. I think the receiver is Shrek, because he gets the objects, his swamp and when he and Fiona marry each other. The helper in the movie is Donkey because he helps Shrek accomplish his goal. The opponents are the dragon and Lord Farquaad because they try to keep Shrek from achieving his goal and receiving his
object.
Shrek is not a very typical old-fashioned fairytale, such as Little Red Riding Hood, it’s more modern and is also an animation. There is obviously a villain, Lord Farquaad and a princess Fiona, which is typical fairytale features. The movie contains a lot of other fairytale creatures from other all ready existing fairytales: Snow White, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Robin Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Captain Hook etc. The “untraditional” fairytale “Shrek” is a frame story because it starts and ends with a book opening and closing. The genre of the movie is for example a love story, a romance and especially a comedy.
The movie has a variety of genres but I think the main genre is romance (a love story) because the director of the movie wants to show a fairy tale that still has the classic start: ‘’once upon a time’’ and ending/saying: “and they lived happily ever after”. There is also many subgenres in the movie, for example fantasy because of the supernatural elements, like Fiona being under a curse and Donkey being able to talk. The movie also contains the subgenres action, comedy and animation. Shrek is a very unorthodox character and hero because in a traditional fairy tale the hero would save the princess and marry her himself. But in this fairy tale Shrek saves the princess to get his swamp back which isn’t so typical. It’s also typical for a fairy tale to have a handsome, young prince and in Shrek it’s an ugly, big and “terrifying” ogre.
Shrek is a green ogre, who only cares about his swamp. He is an antihero with an Irish accent and is selfish, terrifying and unsociable. Along the journey with his friend Donkey, he finds something more to life than his beloved swamp.
Donkey is a colorblind, grey talking donkey, and is Shrek’s best friend and helper. He is always happy, and can never stop singing or talking. Donkey is American, which makes the friendship of Shrek and Donkey unusual.
Princess Fiona is a princess who is stuck in the highest tower in a castle far away with lava around. She was put there by her parents, when a witch casted a spell on her when she was a child, to turn into an ogre at sundown. Underneath the dress and the pretty face, is a cool karate girl, who knows how to take care of herself. She talks like Shakespeare would. For example she says “Fare-thee-well” instead of saying “goodbye”, you get the feeling that she tries too hard to be the perfect princess. She has an opinion of how everything is going to happen, until Shrek came along and changed everything. So I would say the story is unorthodox.
