Semple. Through these short stories he used this character to represent the black man of his times. However the question remains, is Jesse B. Semple an accurate representation of the black man of 1940s? This question can best be answered by looking at the conditions of society during that time period, what the mind set of the black man in that era and comparing it to the representation that Hughes created with Jesse B. He warmingly starts off by thanking some former presidents, “President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama....”, the American people especially, and everyone around the world for his election win. His voice is very direct and to the point when he states how he would approach the nation as a whole: “We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore it's promise for all of our people”. The formal tone allowed a flow through his speech that showed his thoughts clearly and straightforwardly. The short pauses created tension and a sense of understanding between President Trump and his audience. Much of his…

I will be comparing the two stories of David Gelernter and Sherry Turkle. Gelernter’s story explains why children who use computers in schools are not learning basic skills, while Turkle’s story tells why children who use computers in school are actually changing the way people think in life. I will be showing their similarities throughout my paper. Both Gelernter and Turkle talk about using computers in the school system. They both believe that this does not help anyone learn it just changes the way we think or stops kids from wanting to open a book and learn something for themselves.…

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X are the two best known African-American leaders of the last century. Both wanted to see black people in the best possible position, yet were very different philosophers, and differed on the use of violence to achieve their goals. As can be seen, in his "I Have a Dream" speech, Martin Luther King Jr. looked forward to the time when blacks and whites would sit down together at a table of brotherhood. However, Malcolm X was interested first in African-Americans gaining control of their own lives, as is distinguished in his speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet." When comparing and contrasting King's "I Have a Dream" with Malcolm X's "The Ballot or the Bullet", one witnesses both the similarities in the two leaders' rhetorical styles, and the differences in their tone and message.…

Today I found my LOC story at the pool. We had a bunch of things going on today such as master swim, swim lessons, lap swimming, and recreational swimming for the kids. I stopped by to talk with Pamela Harvey, one of our parents who consistently has her kids in swim lessons. I was happy to see her registered again for lessons. This time when I saw her, I asked why she registers and stays a member of the Y. It’s funny because she said exactly what I would want her to say. She explained that she loves the Y because it’s a good place for the family. It being Christian based was important to her. She even talked about why she likes our mission. This one thing stood out to me when she said, “everyone is friendly and I can tell they care about the…

Interestingly, Obama is rarely seen reading a speech. The president is known to read from tele-prompters however the audience is unable to tell. It appears to the audience that Obama creates every speech on the spot, however he is somehow able to convey every point with extreme clarity, and free from any pauses. It is clear that Obama is a naturally talented orator, and that he has honed his skills through practice at Harvard, and throughout his political career. No matter what side of the political arena one may be on, seeing Obama speak live is a compelling experience, more so than past presidents. He is able to instantly connect with the audience with clarity and conviction.…

My tribute speech and informative speech were similar with Angela’s comments about reading off note cards and I clearly see that in both speeches. I can see in both my speeches that I’m very nervous and need to just take deep breaths after each point. I’m rarely looking at my audience in both speeches. I have no hand gestures in either of my speeches which is something I need to work on. I needed to practice both speeches a lot more then I had done. My peer comments on having nice clear points are the same on both speeches. The peer comments also said I need to work on eye contact and gestures on both speeches.…

In 1835 Emerson settled in Concord, Massachusetts, where he started friendship with other literary figures like Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864), Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862), Bronson Alcott (1799–1888), and Margaret Fuller (1810–1850). They met occasionally and informally to discuss religion, philosophy, and literature. Those meetings led to the emergence of the movement known as Transcendentalism. The Transcendentalists prized poetry as the loftiest form of artistic expression and advised poetic innovation, not blind imitation of poetic conventions (Buell 97). The core of Emerson’s beliefs, and of the movement’s creed can be found in a half dozen pieces: “The American Scholar” (1837), “Divinity School Address,” (1838) “Self-Reliance,” (1841)…
