As a child she was reserved. She was a wallflower. She was a little brown haired kid.
“Perms were a big thing when I was a kid, so my mom gave me a perm and my hair was so short that I looked like orphan Annie for a while.”
She hated being in the middle of social events, but rather watch from the sidelines. As she grew in her teen years, she started to break out of her shell and started putting herself out into the world. She says that over the years she has gained more confidence.

that’s built her confidence. Mellanie is the young women’s president for the Taylor ward. In the Church of Jesus Christ in Latter Day Saints, churches are named by location and how large congregations are. For example, our church is located in Taylor, Texas and has approximately 300 or more members, so it is classified as a ward, hence the name ‘Taylor Ward”. The Taylor ward is usually where we hold our weekly meetings. The building is a red church on the corner of Mallard Ln. and North Dr.
Every Wednesday we meet up to go to the church activity for that week and have our interview there. Since her position is the young women’s president, she is responsible for the youth ministry that focuses on the women from ages 12 to 18. Her committee is made up of 10 women total that she’s responsible for leading and guiding as well. This job is not easy, it takes a lot of time and dedication.
She spends most of her time at the church; because of this, it has been the one place where she has felt long lasting feelings of fulfillment and peace.
“ I’ve had the opportunity to work in the business world and been assigned several many projects that were very lengthy, require a great deal of time and energy and time away from family. It was a great sense of accomplishment to get the project done, but as soon as I turned it in within a week it was gone and there wasn’t any other fulfillment and there wasn’t another sense of accomplishment. So being in the church and taking on this calling, service has been very effortless and the outcome of it is so long lasting and can change people's lives.” She says to me as we are driving home from a weekly church activity.
Mellanie is a very spiritual woman, which I admire a lot.
Her husband says that since they have met, she has grown spiritually. She has been called to many incommensurable callings in the church, which have helped with her spiritual growth. She is always very open, enthusiastic, positive, energetic, and compassionate. She always has a smile. She is very generous. Mellanie is always thinking about service before self. For this reason, it makes her such a good leader. She is one of the best leaders I have had the privilege of knowing. Mellanie is so warm hearted, understanding, affectionate. She’s the one person you can go to and tell everything to. Her son, Jonah, described her as someone you can trust information with. “She’s natural leader. She’s firm with gentleness mixed in.” He tells me. I asked another member of the church about what she thought of Mellanie. “There are so many great qualities about her. I really admire her. I also really admire her family.”
Mellanie and her husband, Gary Stewart, have two sons, Andersen and Jonah. They are a very loving family. From all the interviews I noticed that family is a really big part of her life. It's basically her life. She is very compassionate about her family. I look up to her. One day I want to start a family, and I strive to be an amazing mother and wife as she
is.
