them” (page 99) by reading this quote it tells us that the Giver no longer has enough strength to store all the memories and must transmit them to Jonas, who one day will also become tired and weak from the memories. Additionally, to have one to two people carry the world’s memories is like having to live through millions of different people's lives, through the mournful times and the cheerful times.
Therefore in the Giver’s community they believe that memories are dangerous, while they are actually a vital part of life.
Having your own set of memories is extremely important because not only do we learn from our memories, but they aso better and enrich our lives. Eventually in the novel, Jonas begins to wonder why memories cannot be shared but kept inside on person. Jonas asks the Giver “But why can’t everyone have memories? I think it would seem a little bit easier if the memories were shared. You and I would not have to bear so much by ourselves, if everybody took apart.” (page 112) When reading this passage in The Giver we find out the Jonas wishes that his community never created sameness and that he wants everyone to have the chance to share memories, instead of just one person holding all of them. By having memories we learn precious lessons as well as when we share them we learn from other people’s very own experiences, which has a major significance in our
lives. Although having painful memories can truly hurt someone they are equally important to the joyous memories. For, each individual deserves to have their own special memories and should have the chance to hear other’s. Not only does not having memories impact our lives, but they also would cause us to lose having feelings. Feelings are also an extremely vital part of life and I could not imagine life without them. Jonas feels the same exact way when he “I wish we still had that.” (page 126)which he whispers quietly. By Jonas telling us how he feels we begin to understand that Jonas is not fond of the way his community decided to take away memories and wishes that it was “still that way.”
Furthermore, the dystopia did not make a wise decision to assign someone to carry the whole world’s memories. Memories are such a great thing to have and share and they even help shape the way we are, but the community never looked at the bright side of having memories. Additionally memories enrich our lives and are a highly important variable in life. Not only would life become much more dull, but without memories that would mean that we would be living a life with no feelings. So, Jonas and the Giver’s old community is not ideal without memories, whether they are enlightening or disappointing, we learn from them and they are absolutely not dangerous.
