This essay will give a short summary of one theory that may affect one cognitive process, in this case memory. First of all the cognitive level of analysis it's how mental processes in the brain develops the information. It includes how we take the information from the outside world like daily activities and how we make sense of it but most important what use we make of the information.
One theory of how emotion may affect the cognitive process of memory is Flashbulb Memory suggested by Brown and Kulik (1977). Emotions have been considered as to play a big role and to have a huge effect on memory. Flashbulb memories are defined as being highly detailed snapshots of the moment and circumstances in which really emotional/important news were heard. Inside the flashbulb memory theory there are six main features that Brown and Kulik said people remembered, including: who told you the news, what you were doing when you heard the news, where you were, how you felt, others impact, and what happened afterwards. Flashbulb memories are believed to be really hard in forgetting and this it's only because it includes a great emotional impact on people.
The flashbulb memory (FBM) theory is very significant for many people because it's somewhat different, because it suggests that the memories are more vivid and easily to remember. An example of a flashbulb memory might be when the twins towers collapsed and the moment when each American citizen found out about it, if you ask most of them can remember clearly how they found out and what where they doing, they can answer the six main features of the theory. This it's all due because of the immense emotional importance that such big event had, were many people were killed.
