Mental Health Case Studies
I recently saw a young 18-year-old female in my clinic who was seeking pain medications for abdominal pain. Her urine pregnancy test was positive. The moment I told her the results, the patient was in tears. She broke down and told me that she was addicted to opiate pain medications. She was suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms and did not know what to do. She said that her father left the family when she was 9 and her mother died from an overdose last year. She did not have a job, nor had any close friends. I could see it in her eyes, she was completely helpless. I fought tears in my eyes as she was talking about how she was forced into addiction by her former boyfriend. Her boyfriend recently left her after her doctor stopped prescribing …show more content…
In fact I told her that she was very brave to come back and see me instead of taking the easy route and going back to her old ways. She told me that the only reason she had came back to see me was because she did not want me to think all my hard work was for nothing. She was so happy to have such a caring doctor and promised to never relapse again.

She was back to her regular routine. Her pregnancy progressed without any complications. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy. After becoming a mother she wanted to be self sufficient. She began applying for jobs and was fortunate to obtain an interview at the local hospital. I personally wrote a letter of recommendation towards her job application which helped her get the job. Her happiness knew no bounds after getting the job.

She continues to undergo treatment and is gradually being tapered off her medications. Every time I see an article in the newspaper about the death of a young boy or girl due to an overdose, I think back to the first day I saw her. I feel extremely fortunate to able to inspire her to change her lifestyle from a drug addict to a hard working single mother with a lifetime of opportunity ahead of

Being hired as a new administrator for Gotham City Medical Center which mainly focus on mental health issues comes with a host of task. The inpatient and outpatient services are housed in separate buildings on the same campus which caused problems by the center during file recording. After an audit conducted by the New York State Office of Mental Heath several findings were highlighted that concerned them. The two primary findings which were patients notes were written once a week which tells me that the therapist did not record any individual notes at all. The second finding was that sign-in sheets were present for those who attended but no notes on their daily progress and visits were recorded in their records. Also patient mental health information was shared with the media which is unethical. As a new administrator, I would be entering into a setting where unethical activities are occurring, overwhelmed staffs and improper handling of patient files. As a new administrator, the findings require attention to develop a system for providing better mental healthcare services.…

Human behavior is complex and extremely variable among people. Some conducts of acting in the world are exposed by the population on a regular basis and seem to be well adjusted for functioning well in certain situations. Over time, understanding of and explanations for psychological disorders have gone through several significant changes. The primary statement of the medical mode is that mental, like physical, illnesses are best diagnosis and treated as medical illnesses. Psychiatry is a division of medicine, so it is not a coincidence that terms such as illness, diagnosis, and therapy or treatment are used in the context of psychological disorders.…

The most appropriate intervention for Ashley is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT will teach the patient coping skills, how to name negative thinking patterns, and how to process her feelings. Ashley is open to individual therapy; even so, a cultural implication for Ashley is that she reports she and her kin are not likely to seek therapy. Constant negative thoughts such as “ I am never going to get better” or “Cancer stops me from doing everything” can influence health care decisions (Jones, 2016). CBT will allow for Ashley to learn relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and rhythmic breathing that can help her to unwind during this difficult time. Ashley’s husband can attend sessions if he wishes…

A problem in my community and unfortunately throughout many other communities as well in West Virginia is the rampant issue of drug addiction. I believe that because of this rise in people addicted to drugs has led to an increase in burglaries, overdoses, and deaths in my area. West Virginia has the highest overdose death rate in the country. In 2014, the most recent year available, 627 people died from drug overdoses here in West Virginia (Griffith, 2016, p. 1A). About ten years ago a classmate of my young son lost his mother due to an overdose situation. It was heartbreaking. She had been battling drug addiction and had recently been through a treatment program, but tragically it had not been successful for her. In my area, there has been…

While I have always been passionate about social justice and mental health, outside of my personal experiences, and some limited volunteering, I have had limited exposure to work with marginalized persons. This is precisely why I am currently entering the mental health field, and seeking to work with such populations. Horizons has provided a rich experience because most of my clients are on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale, and come from diverse backgrounds.…

I visited Grandma Jill on the weekend. She’s doing well since her recovery and has attended her weekly rehabilitation without so much of a fuss, which is good news for all of us. You know how she gets when she’s off her pills. Furthermore, the doctors have said she’d doing well without them for a month now and shouldn’t need to rely on them as much anymore. It’s so tiring worrying about her constantly, but I don’t dare confess that to anyone. They all love her so much... they’re all fighting for her, so I know I must. It just feels good to open up and let those feelings release I guess, which is why I’m glad you’re here to listen. I hope things are going well with your part time. I know it’s hard balancing school and running errands simultaneously but I’m sure your efforts will pay off in the long run. Keep me updated with life. R…
