become an important issue. Fully aware of the problem, the World Bank and the World Health Organization met in 2016 and discussed that mental health needs to be a top priority. Mental health affects hundreds of millions of people global. About 1 out of 4 people in the world suffer from a mental disorder. The International Classification of Diseases and Related Heath Problems defines mental disorders as "A wide range of mental, neurological, and behavioral disorders". In low and medium-income states, about 76% to 85% people with mental disorders lack average treatment and in high-income states about 35% to 50% people with severe mental illness receive no treatment at all. Having a mental illness and not receiving treatment can make it harder to to find work. This increases homelessness in the city which can later cause problems. Since it is hard for mentally ill people to get jobs, they can't afford treatment and don't have access to mental benefits. Non-communicable diseases such as cancers and diabetes kill up to 38 million people. However 15 million of these deaths are people who were born with mental disorders and die earlier in life or to suicide due to lack of treatment. Mentally ill people also are excluded from society and discriminated against. Some ways they are discriminated against is in some countries they can't vote. The treatment for mental disorders is expected to increase rapidly throughout the years especially in the underdeveloped states. One big solution the world needs to work on is to increase the funds that go into mental health. Australia, Japan, and Switzerland are big factors in this and they prioritize this issue. Australia has a 153 billion dollar fund for mental health care. This problem is slowly getting recognized globally but guarantees of mental health treatment are still excluded from national policies and plans. The government of Australia has a relatively advanced health system. The government of Australia recognizes the challenges of mental health, but the biggest challenge is use of the primary health services and community support more beneficial. Another issue is that they need to provide appropriate assessment and confrontations for those with mental illness. The article "Facts and Stats about Mental Illness in Australia" states mental disorders are very common in Australia; about 1 out of 5 people between the ages twenty through sixty will experience a mental disorder in their life and 1 out of 3 young people will experience a mental disorder by the age 25. According to the article "Talk About Mental Health, for a Change" almost 50% of Australians will encounter a mental disorder in their life. The number of mentally ill cases has risen about 2.5% over the last quarter of the year. Deeply concerned about these numbers, the government of Australia have implemented a Mental Health Week. This week has the people of Australia show support to those that are mentally ill. The mentally ill also talk about how their disorder affects them. The country of Australia is currently trying to improve partnerships with psychiatrists, other medical assistants and state-funded mental health services so the best help is available for the mentally ill. Seeking for answers, the government of Australia has spent about $153 billion USD on research for mental disorders and facilities for the mentally ill. Australia recently launched a two year insurance plan to try to help those with mental disorders. This plan is strictly based on early intervention and community based care. The Australian Government would like to propose solutions to reducing the issue of mental illness and helping the people with mental illness more appropriately.
Some problems that are currently happening are treatment prices, discrimination, and the homelessness rate has gone up due to mental illness. In the past the UN has posted guidelines on how to treat and handle the mentally ill. The World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged the member states to increase coordination and partnership with sections outside of health to help and reduce the number of the mentally ill. Realizing that some mentally ill people are people discriminated against and being overlooked, the Australian government has created a Mental Health Week where they can speak their stories and it builds the support for the mentally ill. Early diagnosis is also another suggestion that could really help reduce the number of mentally ill people. Having examined the prices of treatment for mental health is very high, it is very hard to receive and early diagnosis. Then as the mentally ill people get older, their illness gets worse and the price increases. Early diagnosis for young children should be solved as soon as possible so mental health can slowly reduce and it can be cured overtime with the observations of the medical staff. A way of doing this is to cut back on other funds in your country like sports and donate some of that money to a fund for mental health to create for facilities for the mentally ill. The Government of Australia recommends other countries to create an insurance plan for those who need extra help with getting an early diagnosis. Without insurance, many patients would not be able to afford most of their surgeries or medication. Treatment is getting better medicines and technology to help cure those who need it, but now the treatment for mental health is taking a turn to behavioral treatment such as a therapist or just environmental support. According to the research of
The United States, psychiatric advance directives (PADs) are legal references that allow competent people to declare solutions for the future mental health treatment. To add to that information some medications can make mental illnesses worse so therapists and psychiatries will do more good then bad. Convinced that the environment support has a lot to do with reducing the mentally ill the Australian Government has given a mental health week to gain the general people's empathy so fundraisers for the mentally ill and their facilities can be more easily obtained. Expecting the issue of mental health to be fully recognized now and hopefully slowly reduce the number of mentally ill if these adjustments are made.
