For me, the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the mentally ill and their families shows true personal and professional fulfilment. At the university, I did not abandon my job as a career. I joined both studies and care for part time working with adults with dementia and those with learning disability. That was when my desire to get a post graduate degree in mental health nursing developed. With work experience, I was a care assistant from 2007 till 2012. I have worked in residential homes as a full-time care assistant. My job was at dementia set up and some of my duties as a carer were administering medication to residents, supporting residents to wash and dress, assisting residents to bed and checking on them during the night as requested. General housekeeping, including laundry and placing orders and receiving service users medications, supplies were some of my duties.
