Alpha Mansaray Family Nurse Practitioner Program Wilmington University Statement of Goals As a child growing up in country of Sierra Leone during times of civil unrest, I watched my grandmother who lacked the ability to read and write care of an entire village of people because of the compassion she had for she fellow Africans. As she is much older now and no longer resides in Sierra Leone, she always reminds me of her story every now and then of how a young African girl without the ability to read or write was chosen by the U.N. and trained in the field of nursing, and with the amount of knowledge she acquired from them she was able to save countless lives during times of civil war. This passion has been passed down from generation to generation with my mother becoming and nurse and I, myself following in their footsteps and becoming part of the profession. There has always been a yearn within me to enter a profession such as nursing where I could provide compassionate care to those that may be going through uncertain times, and to one day return to Sierra Leone and have the ability to provide care to thousands of my fellow Africans that may not have access to healthcare.…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

Caring for others has always been a deep passion of mine. As a nurse this is an important skill to have. Initiative is another of these skills, in which I developed during my second placement at a specialist support centre for adults with learning disabilities.…

It is said that a person has achieved “good health” when they are generally free from illness, injury, or pain. As an advocate for patients, I knew a career in nursing would be the profession that would allow me to thrive in an environment with motives of helping others. Nevertheless, I took the route of pursuing a biology degree to get a complete understanding of the human body. After intricate research, it is in my interest to apply my skills in this profession which will allow me to explore my compassion in health care.…
