Depression is an exceedingly common psychological disorder that affects approximately 19% of people over the age of 16 according to The Office for National Statistics. The DSM V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) describes the criterion for MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) as “depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities for more than two weeks” that leads to “impaired function”, in one’s occupation, education or social life. As well as affecting the individuals life drastically, it is estimated by the UK Centre for Mental Health that depression costs the economy an estimated at £105 billion a year. The report was developed as a response to feedback from patients who have had experience with mental health problems, focussing primarily on the following issues; prevention, access, integration, quality and experience of care. The report consists of recommendations for the NHS as well as for the government as a whole. This approach aims to tackle mental health issues in two ways; better treatment as well as taking steps to improve quality of life and prevent the development of mental health issues in the first place. The recommendations made to the NHS range from improvements in staffing of mental health care settings to improved safeguarding of vulnerable groups and increasing research to make for better care in the future. As the report and recommendations were published just 3 months ago and the aim is for all recommendations to have been met by 2021, it is difficult to come to any valid conclusions as to whether or not it has been a success. However, according to the response to the report by the NHS, the NHS has pledged over £1 billion in funding in the next five years in order to reach 1 million more individuals in need of care. Due to this high prevalence it is important for learning disability nurses to be able to effectively treat their patients for depression whilst being mindful of their learning disabilities. It is important that the nurse is able to communicate effectively with the patient in a way which they understand, so the patient can independently make informed decisions about their own care. Learning Disability nurses primarily use the patient-centred approach to care, however, the nurse needs to communicate with the patients families where appropriate to ensure support when they are at home and to ensure that the families know how to identify possible worsening in the patients’ depression as it can present differently in individuals with learning
