room to take them. The nurse in charge of the meds made sure the patients had swallowed the pills; he made them open their mouth. Breakfast time started at 8:15 the kids lined up and the nurse checked their diet to see what they were able to eat to meet their nutritional needs.
The patients gather together at 9:00 to join the community meeting. The RN was able to go over the 6 major unit rules related to safety. Some of the kids shouted out some of the safety rules, for example, not going into people’s room, keeping their hands to themselves and do not harm self or others. Also, the patients had the opportunity to share their thoughts about three different questions:
1. What they had learned during hospitalization
2. What they would they like to do different after discharge
3. What made them feel enriched
It was so interesting to hear the different answers of each question and see how there were able to open up with their peers and staff.
They expressed their feelings, some felt happy while others felt depress, angry and suicidal. The community meeting ended at 11:00 after each of them had shared their feelings. I felt that some of the kids were able to feel better after they expressed their feelings.
Around 11:15 I went to the intake unit. I was able to see how the intake specialist with a friendly manner and depth knowledge in psych spoke directly with patients and their families. She identified their needs, their medical history, physical and mental state. Before admitting a patient, the intake specialist review the patient medical history with a close eye in order not to miss any detail that might be of importance for the best medical care.
I was able to review some of the cases; it was interesting to see how mental illness can take many forms, just as physical illness do. After reviewing some of the cases, I was able to see how mental illness can affect people at any age.
For clinical, I prepared by learning the different types of voluntary and involuntary intakes and the psych meds. These came helpful when I was reviewing the cases and see how they are prescribed for the different mental
conditions.
During my first day on the adolescent and intake unit I was able to learned how the pressure of growing up can be very difficult for some kids and how that can affect their mental status. These conditions such as depression have to be taken seriously since can have bad outcomes in the lives of adolescents.
