November 09, 2014 Abused and neglected. Throughout centuries the mentally ill have been abused and neglected. They have been on many occasions, the subjects of unethical experiments against their will. Abuse to the mentally ill is a type of injustice in most societies and it is not always addressed. At times the mentally ill are placed in facilities and they are forgotten. They seemed to have lost their voices and cannot advocate for themselves.
More than fifty four million Americans are diagnosed with a mental illness any given year, and many of them go without the necessary treatment. One in four adults and one in five children will have a mental disorder in their life time. The three major types of mental illness are: schizophrenia, delusional, and psychotic disorder. The symptoms shown in Schizophrenias are: auditory and visual hallucinations, paranoia, and feelings of persecution. It can usually occur in late teens and twenties. The treatment for schizophrenia is both a good medication plan, and psychotherapy to help maintain the individuals’ ability to experience social skills. The symptoms of delusional disorder are: one cannot tell the difference of what is real life from what is imagined, and misinterpretation of perceptions or experiences. It can usually occur in late teens and early twenties. The treatment for delusional disorder is antipsychotic drugs which reduce hallucinations and delusions and improve thinking and psychological help. The symptoms of psychotic disorder are: scary behavior, loss of personal hygiene, and incoherent speech. It can occur in early childhood and teen years. The treatment for psychotic disorder is also antipsychotic drugs, and psychological help.
