Friar Lawrence, Mercutio & the Nurse are to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo & Juliet. Their actions have all contributed to the tragedy. Mercutio was the one who persuaded Romeo to go to the Capulets ball. The Nurse was the one who acted as the messenger and Friar Lawrence was the one who married them in the first place.
Mercutio is Romeo’s witty, fun-loving & courageous friend, he can also be quite moody at times with sudden outbursts of temper. He is a kinsmen to the prince and is one of the most important characters in the play. Mercutio is responsible for not only the death of Romeo & Juliet, but for his own. By refusing to leave the streets even after Benvolio pleaded him too, he was asking for trouble. Benvolio: I pray thee, Good Mercutio, let’s retire: The day is hot, the Capels are abroad, And if we meet we shall not ‘scape a brawl, For now these hot days is the mad blood stirring. If Mercutio didn’t inbetween the feuding houses than he would still been alive & Romeo wouldn’t have to avenge his death and kill Tybalt. Which ultimately leads to deaths of Romeo & Juliet. Mercutio’s attitude towards love is what causes Romeo to meet Juliet in the first place. When Romeo complains about his unrequited love for Rosaline, Mercutio simply tells him to get over it. *If love be rough with you, be rough with love; prick love for pricking, and you beat love down. 1. 4.4. After he says this he takes Romeo to the Capulet’s ball, where he meets Juliet. If Romeo never met Juliet, they would both be alive.
The Nurse was Juliets carer from birth, they have a strong bond.
She is known for talking a lot, usually about nonsense, she is also very indecisive. The nurse acted as Juliets messenger, Act 2 scene 4 lines 154-156 Nurse: Good heart, and I’ faith I will tell her as much, Lord, Lord! She will be a joyful woman. At first the nurse helps Romeo & Juliet, but when she hears of Romeo’s banishment. She advises Juliet to forget about him and to marry Paris. Act 3, scene 5 lines 214- 226. She suggests bigamy, and Juliet is furious that the Nurse talked about her husband as a dishcloth. Lines 234- 242. This is what causes Juliet to turn to the friar and have suicidal thoughts. Because the one person she depended on most betrayed her. The nurses sudden change of heart may be due to selfishness- she might of not wanted Juliet to go live in Mantua, or maybe she wanted to move in with Juliet in Paris’s
home.
Friar Laurence is the religious leader in Romeo and Juliet, he is wise and has expert knowledge of mystical potions. Friar Laurence is most to blame in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, He chose to marry Romeo & Juliet despite his doubts. Act 2 scene 3, Lines 67- 82. He married them to try and end the feud between the Montague and Capulets. He was responsible for giving Juliet the sleeping potion and making sure the letter reached Romeo. He also left Juliet alone in fear that he would get caught by the watchmen. He also forshadows the tragic event varies times throughout the play for example *These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die* Act 2, scene 6 lines 9-10* and Act 2 scene 3, lines 96 they stumble that runs fast.* The Friars actions where ultimately what lead to Romeo & Juliets suicides.
