The centerpiece of the piece is obviously Mary, though she is on the right side of the painting. In one hand she holds an open bible, and she holds her other hand up in prayer while she is looking down with her eyes almost completely shut. She has a halo surrounding her head as gold rays shine down on her from god, carrying Jesus to her. There is also a dove surrounded by gold above her head. This was a very common Christian symbol used to represent the Holy Spirit.…

They are all in the nude. The art of cannibalism associated with the idea behind is very fascinating to behold. The fact that Ugolino yields to the temptation to devour his sons and grandsons is beyond imagination. What really impresses me about this sculpture evidence of Carpeaux’s knowledge of the anatomy of human body and how was able to incorporate those ideas into the sculpting of this…

The scene it portrays shows a woman holding an infant while she stands on a chariot drawn by two lions. Surrounding her in the air and around her feet are sixteen angels or cherubs. In the background there is a horizon with foggy mountains and a lake. On the left and right of the picture there are two columns reminiscent of the Classical era and at the top of the painting there is curtains and berry garland, almost like the scene was staged in a theater.…

The first panel is the donors that commissioned the painting by Campin, the second panel is the same Annunciation scene of Mary and Gabriel but depicted quite differently, and the third panel is Saint Joseph. This painting pays close attention to clarity and detail, with varying colors and realism. The painting is in oil, and has a style that reflects the Northern Renaissance period. For example, the angel and Mary do not have halos, and it lacks linear perspective. The lack of halos, as well as Mary’s face (which doesn’t seem too happy about the fact that she is about to conceive Christ’s child) could relate to the religious separation that Northern Europe was experiencing during the Renaissance. Northern Renaissance art is very well known for its symbolism, and in this painting nearly every object is symbolic of spiritual ideas (Harris). For example, lilies represent Mary’s virginity, Joseph’s tools represent the Passion of the Christ, and the extinguished candle represents God taking human…

In the background of the piece there is a woman holding a dead chicken with a bowl of what looks like possibly fruit on her head. In front of her is a child standing with her back from the viewer and is holding a basket of fruit that she seems to be presenting to the woman with the chicken. Front center of the piece is a couple. The man seems to be trying to lead the woman somewhere. She stands in front of him with her back turned away from him and has her hand placed over her chest.…

The emperor Justinian was in the center of the picture. He wore a hat inlaid with jade, and he wore a fuchsia robe with golden circular. This picture drew the 12 people, and just like the 12 Christian disciples. Then, as I mention before, the shape of these 12 people are similar and slender, reflecting the characteristics of Byzantine-style in this period. The religious atmosphere in this painting is…

Gender is a concept society often challenges whether by males or females, living up to traditional ideas causes constrictions to the individual. “The Altar of the Family” written by Michael Wilding suggests that conforming to traditional ideas or stereotypes provides constrictions to an individual’s beliefs. The author uses third person narrative in order to position the reader. Characterisation invites the reader to be critical of the father’s perspective on masculinity. Figurative language emphasises the opposing ideas of masculinity and setting described in the text produces different environments in which diverse ideas of gender are challenged.…

The second piece that i have chosen to analyze is “The Taking of Christ” created in 1602 by Michelangelo Caravaggio. This 2-dimensional piece was created using oil on a canvas. What is happening in this piece is that soldiers seem to be trying to take Jesus Christ but two men are standing in the way trying to block the guards from reaching jesus while one of them even appears to be verbally objecting to the taking of christ. The most noticeable elements of art in this piece are space and color. I think that the color is a vital part of this piece because the dark and dreary color help portray the heartbroken and miserable tone of the people that are upset that the soldiers are taking jesus away from them.…
