CONSTITUTION 1787
The Constitution served as the creation of the national government. The document addressed how the government will operation as a national and sovereign government, limits the government’s powers, and ultimately that power is held by the government’s citizens. In addition the Constitution dictated fundamental laws and guaranteed basic rights for its citizens. Among these rights included the 3/5 Compromise which addressed the issue of representation and direct taxation and concluded that each slave represented 3/5 of a free person. With this law in place, the Constitution supported racial superiority and slavery. As a result led to the Missouri Compromise.

Many whites west of the Mississippi wanted to expand and settled into territory west of Texas. These expansionist pressures led the United States into war with Mexico, which led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
TREATY OF GUADALUPE HIDALGO 1848
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo cede territory north of the Rio Grande, California, and New Mexico. In addition, assume financial responsibility for its new citizens (if they had any claims with Mexico), and paid Mexico $15 million. The expansion of the United States territory led to the Compromise of 1850.
COMPROMISE OF 1850
The Compromise of 1850 gave a temporary solution to whether California, and the Utah and New Mexico territory will be free or slave states. The compromise determine that California will be a free state while the Utah and New Mexico territory will decide for themselves. While the Democrats and the Whigs both agreed to this settlement, they still disagree on the stance of slavery.
