Washington took office as the first president of the United States on April 30th, 1789. His first task was to organize new departments of the executive branch. He created a cabinet of advisers that consisted of him and four other men. They would met regularly and discuss major policy issues. different perspectives. After establishing the executive branch cabinet, he divided the power equally between groups with different political vies, groups such as the anti-federalist and federalist. Another way in which he helped establish a stable government after the constitution was by sending soldiers after the Mingo Creek protestors. The protestors turned the riots into the Whiskey Rebellion. He invoked the Militia Law because the federal army was too small to be used. This action proved that he government could protect itself.
Washington also established the judiciary branch and its power through the Judiciary Act of 1789. The Judiciary Act of 1789 created one Supreme Court and a court for each of the 13 states, this divided up the power of the Judiciary Branch. Then to deal with national debt he created tariffs. The tariff Act of 1789 helped strengthen the American economy and created a self- sufficient nation. Washington sent Chief Justice John Jay on a mission to Britain to talk that country out of its offensive practice of seizing American ships and impressing seamen into British navy. When Jay brought back the treaty, it maintained Washington’s policy of neutrality that kept the United States at peace, this is known as the Jay Treaty.
Thomas Jefferson took office on March 4th, 1801 and stayed in office for two terms.
Like Washington, Jefferson had also helped to establish a stable government after the adoption of the Constitution. Jefferson retained the loyalty of Democratic-Republican government. He reduced the size of the military, eliminated a number of federal jobs, repealed the excise taxes and lowered the national debt. He believed that in order order to be a better government, the government should govern less so he created least oppressive government. To do this he made sure that no one would rise to absolute power. He set a precedent for presidents that they can only serve two terms. So that the citizens would not feel like they were under a dictatorship, this kept the government stable. When Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Purchase, it showed Federalist to be weak, sectionalist party that could do little more than complain about Democratic- Republican policies. Jefferson’s accomplishments were successful because of Washington’s
groundwork.
In conclusion, under these two men’s control during their presidency, America was successfully put on its path to a stable democracy country. They created foreign policies that would peacefully settle disputes with other countries. They also created protective tariffs and created a stable economy, which amounted to a steady and better-run government.
