Response Paper #1
Political Issues in Mexico and Its Political System Mexico’s current President Enrique Pena Nieto has proposed laws to fight crime in Mexico; unfortunately, this is not enough for the people. Mexico’s most controversial issues are government corruption, the ongoing drug war and the economy.
Corruption has been in Mexico for many years, this is because Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has ruled for the past 70 years. As stated in Envio magazine, “…is loyal to only two concepts: corruption and impunity”. Not only does corruption happen in government but also, in the police force. An example of this is the mysterious disappearance of the 43 university students of Guerrero. The Government claims were massacred by municipal authorities and drug-traffickers (The Economist). The Mexican government does nothing about this issue, of course with a couple hundred-thousand pesos and the government looks the other way. Another issue, the Mexican drug war.
This war has been ongoing for many years leaving many innocent deaths in its path. Drug cartel sicarios (assassins), the military, and police have committed atrocities and violated human rights countless times (International Socialist Review). Much like corruption the drug war is also own of the reasons why Mexico has not been able to progress. Not only does drug war leave many deaths but also makes the economy worse because of money laundering.
Mexico’s economic problems are the cause of both corruption and the drug war as well. This is because of “the poor justice system”(Forbes). Because of Mexico’s weak rule the economy begins to decrease and the unemployment rate increases. This also causes the increase of violence and poverty
rate.
