Mft Trainee Reflection
My experience as an MFT Trainee consisted of working with the below poverty level population. The mental health status varied from a wide variety of psychosocial and emotional factors that contributed to specific diagnosis, which also included substance abuse/use. Clients of different cultures and languages would arrive to a clinic, feeling unsure about sharing their personal struggles and not knowing what to expect from the evaluating therapist. My experience stems from living in the same underserved community as the clients I worked with. This has allowed me to create a trustworthy and non-judgmental atmosphere where the client could feel safe and is more readily engaged and self-disclose information more openly. I was able to easily build

What I learned from my client was despite her being a single parent of two children are lives do not parallel each other. My clients experience are unique to her and her family. I must realize this and what has worked for me does not mean it will work for her. As a therapist I must remind myself to be present in the room and what chapter in the clients life there are in. It is vital for the therapist not to jump ahead of the client and know what is best for them and force their agenda. Recognizing the countertransference is exceptionally vital when the therapist can relate to their…

The first thing that comes to my mind after seeing the appearance of my client is that knowing that treating domestic violence victims requires specialized training even though many people believe that short term counseling and advocacy are what is necessary to successfully treat domestic violence victims, many times a long term approach needs to be taken in an effort to work through the abuse and to help victims to not get into future relationships that are abusive. These factors are essential in beginning sessions, most all victims of abuse have experienced emotional trauma as a result of being in an abusive relationship. Dealing with these issues takes time, and cannot be worked through in just a few sessions. After these issues have been…

Silence. Silence is what the audience awarded to Jerry Lee Lewis in London, the first stop on his European tour. While he sat at the piano--banging his bony fingers onto the keys with all of his strength, his hair flying in front of his face, sweat dripping down his face, putting all of his energy into his music until he simply had to kick the bench to the side and stand because sitting did not do the song justice--the audience refused to engage in his exuberance. Noticing this, he withdrew from his euphoria and said, “Y’all don’t have to jus’ stand there all quiet.” So they listened.…

In addition, to a staff recognition program, I created a paraprofessional in training presentation. The goal of the presentation was to train future paraprofessionals in their role and expectations as it relates to school policy. The presentation helped teachers provide less training to paraprofessionals during instructional time. They were better able to focus on teaching and achieving student goals. New paraprofessionals were more confident when stepping into the classroom. I take pleasure in being able to help teachers and paraprofessionals work together to meet the needs of the students.…

I was given an opportunity to shadow a session between a patient and a psychiatrist. The patient experienced a lot of trauma growing up such as child abuse, living in foster homes, and homelessness. The psychiatrist initially used psychotherapy to help cope with the trauma. After multiple sessions the patient advised the psychiatrist the negative thoughts, panic attacks, and anxiety would strike unexpectedly. After further review, the psychiatrist prescribed medication for the patient to help suppress mood change and PTSD. I learned ascertaining the cause of psychiatric illness is more than an intellectual pursuit, it can improve the lives of countless patients. I want to help those with mental illness transition into a lifestyle without the burden of anxiety or depression. As an aspiring psychiatrist, I want to do more than just listen. I want to use the power of education to teach patients healthy ways to cope with their issues and also use medicine as a unique addition to improve their mental…

It does not help with developing personal skills, vocational and educational trajectories, or everyday tasks (Fossey, Ellie page 63). Mental illness health is continuing to be under-represented in many workplaces. One of the ways to help overcome these barriers is to have supportive and non-discriminatory workplaces. Meaning that in order to be supportive they should include good communication, value the individual instead of their label, have everyone be able to make a connection in order for the day to go smoothly, and normalize the work place (Fossey, Ellie page 64).…

Concerning self-disclosure, it is pertinent for social workers to maintain their professional boundaries with client's while building an empathic relationship (F. Reamer, 2006). Galina has utilized this interviewing technique in practice and understands the concept of avoiding dual boundaries and remaining non-judgmental in practice (G. Soracheva, personal communication, July 27, 2017). The article Poverty Aware Social Work Practice discusses the importance of social work students utilizing a process of self-reflection pertaining to their personal and cultural values concerning poverty (2013). Although Galina has surpassed the status of a social work student, one can deduce, that she uses self-reflection to enhance her professional development.…

It was a major breakthrough when former president Barrack Obama called for training in Mental Health First Aid. Teachers, police officers, students, individuals and many others to be trained in three distinct elements: to recognize signs and symptoms of mental disorders as well as substance abuse illnesses, to understand de-escalation process in crisis situations, and to institute a timely manner referral to mental health and substance abuse (Mental Health First Aid Legislation, 2015). One of the most critical and compelling goal of the training was to reduce mental health stigma in the community, and I believed that this portion of the law should be expanded in the Mental Health First Aid Act of 2015. Past and current stigma the society, individuals,…

I was able to learn that I do not like providing community based mental health service in my own vehicle. This program has taught me that there are many avenues where I can provide my service and still be able to help my population of choice. I was able to become more self-aware of what I am willing and unwilling to do. The biggest challenge I face in social work practice is being unable to separate my emotions and remain professional while practicing. With the clients I have come into contact with, I have almost always become emotional. I feel like it undermines my professionalism and my ability to provide services. I have worked on ways to show my empathy through non-verbal communication, so that I am not crying or stating something that is coming from an emotional state of mind. However, being emotional is still by biggest challenge that I continue to face in social work practice. Populations I have worked with to date include adults who were receiving mental health skill building services and children receiving intensive in-home and therapeutic day treatment services. The most important ethical or value-based concerns I have are that of competence and social…

Working with the clients that I have this semester, I have found myself doing quite a bit of evidence research to help inform my practice, and then taking what I have discovered and bring that and my questions to supervision. Because this internship and the variety of client that I deal with on a daily basis, each one can be unique in their own way. I possess that inner drive to be better and want to be able to help those that are in need of help. Understanding the person and the environment that surrounds them is an important factor when case managing a client in this environment. I have spent many hours obtaining a better understanding of the struggles the client’s face, the barriers that they faced on a daily basis, and since being housed, what struggles they face when they wake up each day. Having a better understanding of this will help me become a better social worker when it comes to helping this particular…
