As the text describes, the five stages of team development are: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning stages. Forming focuses on team members getting to know each other. The storming stage is when group members are dealing with tensions and defining group tasks. Norming show how group members build relationships and work together. Performance is where the group is maturing in relationships and task performance. Lastly we have Adjourning where the group is disbanding and celebrating accomplishments.(Schermerhorn, Osborn & Uhl-Bien, p.156,157)
The case study is portraying two stages of team development that Christine is going through. With Mike, Christine is stuck on the storming stage. As the text states, “Individuals begin to understand one another interpersonal styles, and efforts are made to find ways to accomplish team goals while also satisfying individual needs (156,157)”. From the beginning, Christine tried to satisfy mike’s needs even when there was a week left. “He had called Christine the week before, telling her that in addition to his course and his job, he was having problems with his girlfriend”(w-113)”. However; with her other group members, she is at the performing stage. The text signifies how during this stage; “Team members are now able to deal with complex tasks and handle internal disagreements in creative ways (157)”. The case study showed how, “All the others had done their designated sections, but Mike had just handed in some rough handwritten notes (w-113)”.
If Christine understood and reviewed the stages of team development, mike wouldn’t be so careless. Christine should have made an initiative of stating her qualities to the group and how “She felt that grades were paramount in giving her a competitive edge when looking for a job
