George is a kind hearted guy but he is faced with the murder of his best friends. Was it the right thing for him to do? George must shoot Lennie because Curley would torture Lennie until death. Everyone in the ranch knowns, “‘Curley’s still mad ‘bout his hand’”(Steinbeck). Lennie had previously broken Curley’s hand and accidentally killed his wife a few minutes before. Curley is fuming mad about the suffering Lennie had caused, most of which Lennie had not meant to do. Though Curley has the right to be upset, his proper judgment is blinded by this anger. Despite Curley having the possibility to turn Lennie into the police for what he had done, but he wants to murder Lennie for his felonies instead. Curley though blind with anger and rage is unable to make the proper choice. He is shown to have a strong dislike to larger men, such as Lennie, which also makes his decisions one sided. George had to step up and shoot Lennie because Curley’s wrath would have made the deed all more despicable. Even though there were other choices, it was impossible for Curley to think straight at the moment. George did this deed out of the love he holds in his heart of Lennie. George made the proper choice of shooting Lennie himself because they love each other. George and Lennie could not be torn apart because, “‘I got you to look after me, but you got me to look after you’” (Steinbeck). One person without the other would make them miserable. Lennie would be starving or even dead due to his inability to comprehend what is correct in society. George on the other hand would just be incredibly lonely.
