Mice of Men Essay George shoots Lennie at the end of the story because Lennie has just killed an innocent woman and is not mentally stable. I believe there are multiple ways to view George’s actions. What George did is both justified and condemnable. Many things help to justify what George did to Lennie. For example on page 95 after George finds the body of the woman Lennie killed he tells Candy, “We gotta tell the guys. They gotta bring him in, I guess.” This shows that George knows Lennie is a danger to society and what he did was unacceptable. George hesitates in turning Lennie in because he loves him however he knows turning Lennie is the right thing to do. In addition, on page 104 right before George executes Lennie, he tells Lennie his favorite stories about how they would live happily together. This gives Lennie happy thoughts right before he dies. Curly and the others would have murdered Lennie anyways, but they would have agonized him and made his death miserable. George allowed Lennie to die peacefully and he made him happy. Even though part of what George did was justified his actions were also very wrong and could have been avoided if George had given more effort. For example on page 40 George talks of Lennie very highly to Slim, “When his aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me. We like to have each other by our side.” This shows that George thought of Lennie as family which makes what he did 10x worse. What George did was not right just because Lennie killed someone does not mean he should be killed. I don’t believe George should be forgiven for his actions. Furthermore on page 97 George shows that he gives up on Lennie, “It seemed to take George sometime to free his words. He- would have went south.” This shows that George gave up on the Lennie and didn’t think he could be a better person, but if George had put more of an effort into to concealing Lennie he could have
