Michael Brown Argumentative Essay

On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. This event led to protests that lasted for weeks to fight for Michael Brown’s rights along with African American rights. The police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Brown was declared not indicted by a judge which caused even more anger in Ferguson. Many people showed their anger by setting several buildings and businesses on fire. I believe that different police policies, training, or administration could have prevented the events in Ferguson, Missouri. Police are professionally trained in several aspects to make sure they are ready and knowledgeable enough to protect citizens by enforcing the law. Officers are said to have spent hours learning how to use each piece of equipment they carry. They learn proper procedures to arrest someone and self protection, and how to handle all types of situations; however, why do they learn that it is okay to shoot someone to death rather than
However, gun shots don’t have to result in death. If the police felt that the situation was dangerous and out of control, they could have shot Brown in the arm or leg, where the damage is repairable and didn’t result in death. In Ferguson the police force is made up of 95% white police officers while the general population is 67% black individuals. This could have an affect on the situation because the white police officers could be more biased towards those black individuals and racially profile them.
